The newly merged Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department (PPR) has teamed up with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP), Advanced Sports Inc, Neighborhood Bike Works, and the bicycle shops of Philadelphia to launch the Philly Pumptrack project; the city’s first ever, public pumptrack.

Pumptracks are one of the fastest-growing attractions in biking, are small in scale and can be enjoyed by cyclists of all ages and skill levels. A pumptrack is fun and teaches riders essential riding skills while building fitness, all in a low-risk environment. A pumptrack in Philadelphia will provide a place where young and old can ride bikes in safe numbers and in mixed-age groups. The Philadelphia Pumptrack will be a venue where riding and spectating can be a community affair.

Location announced!

So the news is out, the location for the PhillyPumptrack is 52nd street and Parkside Ave, Philadelphia. For those familiar with the Belmont Plateau, it’s on the southwestern edge, behind the Mann Music Center. We are so liking that space!

Ed Hein wins the bike! The PhillyPumptrack volunteers delivered the Specialized, P1 bicycle to Ed Hein today. He was stoked to receive the bike, but even more excited to hear about the progress of the PhillyPumptrack. He said, "I didn't think I had a chance of winning at all, I was just making a donation to help the project along. But now that I have this great bike, I am really looking forward to riding it on the ‘track.

The PhillyPumptrack partners would like to thank Ed and everyone else who supported the project this weekend at the Philadelphia Bike Expo. We raised over $1,000 that will go directly to purchasing building materials and tools (and if we are lucky, lights!).

We would like to thank Specialized Bikes and Bicycle Therapy for the sponsorship and providing the P1 Bike. We would also like to acknowledge Fuji Bicycles for providing our booth space.

Stay tuned, as we unveil the concept designs for the site in early December.
