Wow- Thanks to the 30+ Volunteers Who Came Out to Build Today

Thanks to everyone who came out today. We made serious headway sifting, building drains, and sculpting the beginner track. Special thanks to Poje, Chris, John and 'Boon who came out from Jersey to build the beginner track. We owe you guys a frosty few. Kudos to Shannon and Chris, local Parkside Community guys who joined us and our two youngest builders. Next workday is Saturday, Nov 30 10am-1pm.

Thanks to the Parkside Community, Brown's ShopRite, Monster Juices and Ms. Lucinda

This toast is for you!

After three years, this project is happening. Harlan, Kenn and I could not be more thankful for all parties involved in making this project a reality. THIS IS MY PERSONAL TOAST to all of the parties old and new to the project. Thanks is all I can say! Monster and Brown's ShopRite donated $10,000 tonight and I'm holding the check. Ms. Lucinda and the Parkside Community have been so welcoming. There are a lot of unforeseen expenses on this build so thanks... from the bottom of our hearts! We are putting kids and families on bikes and that's all that matters.

Jim's Pumptrack Philosophy

Jim Wants YOU to Know!

Social --Physical -- Environmental -- Agricultural

Come on out and feel Jim's passion for making Pumptracks a vital part of the community. He believes that Pumptracks bring people together, provide space for a healthy family lifestyle, encourage site ownership, provide education about storm-water management and environmental stewardship, and provide a space for native plants and fruit trees.

Belmont Plateau Trail Alliance (BPTA) is having a work day tomorrow for Love Your Park Day. Please head out there from 10-2 to help them get ready for the World SingleSpeed Cross Championship in December. After the workday drive or ride by the track to check it out.

WE, Friends of PhillyPumptrack at Parkside Evans will be holding Volunteer Work Days Every Saturday Morning From November 23rd through the end of the build/sculpt/plant. Volunteer Workdays will be 10am-1pm. We will also be out sifting rocks THIS Sunday, November 17th from 10am-1pm. Come on out with boots, workgloves (we also have some). We will provide rakes, water, snacks and waivers.

For questions call Heidi Grunwald at 267-262-1691 or Kenn Rymdeko at 610-659-4430 or Harlan Price at 717-253-3298.

The last two weeks have been exciting and stressful

Workdays with Jim Dellavalle, Power Corp PHL, Harlan Price, Kevin Clark, Andreina Perez, Jason Mifflin and Nick Esposito

We are both excited to break ground and a bit stressed about the condition of the dirt. There is MUCH work to be done sifting rocks and concrete. Jim is making great progress shaping the track and moving dirt. Below are a few pics from the week. Thanks to everyone who has come out this past week. Jim is on site from 8am-7pm each day Mon - Friday.

Calling Volunteers

If you have some time during the day, Jim Dellavalle and our team are in need of volunteers to help clear stone, debris and concrete from the dirt from illegal dumping on the site. If you head over there, please stop in to see Jim and bring gloves and work boots. Hopefully Jason Mifflin, the PPR Volunteer Coordinator will be on site with waivers.

Jim Dellavalle, our track builder will be onsite beginning Monday, November 4, 2013. Look for safety fencing soon.  In addition, look for us at the Bike Expo November 9 and 10 in the not-for-profit space. We will be raffling off these SE Pumptrack bikes below (thanks to ASI Inc) to raise funds for natural fencing.  STAY TUNED for volunteer days. This build should be approximately 3-4 weeks. We will be doing volunteer sculpting and rain garden planting after that. We will be using the listserv so if you want to be notified, get on our list!

We have finally "seen" the holy grail. The required Donated Services Agreement that the City of Philadelphia requires to DIG on the pumptrack site. It needs the signature of the Commish but it could possibly happen this week. We hope our builder, Jim Dellavalle will be bringing machinery on site soon. You may have noticed the Americorps volunteers that have been on site to clear the herbacious overgrowth on the soil the city dumped last year. MANY THANKS TO THEM!!!

We've also added 3 KEY volunteers to the project management phase. 1) Mark Clark, new to the area from Portland Oregon 2) Andreina Perez, also new to the area most recently from North Carolina, and Philly's own Kevin Clark, now service manager at the Fairmount Bike Shop. Stop by and see him there!

We will be posting volunteer days here so stay tuned. We NEED to plant before the end of November to have any shot at the plants surviving. We realize that the holidays are upon us shortly, but this could be our BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT ever to the kids and families in West Philly and all of the cyclists in Philly interested in riding/training/building skills.

Long awaited Update

We finally received sign-off on the design of the track. The city legal and risk departments are now reviewing the track. The builder was required to obtain Workers Comp insurance. He has done that and the certificate has been sent to legal. We wait...  If you have driven or ridden by the track recently you know it looks like a forest. Tom Witmer from PPR was out to review. We wait for PPR to remove the brush so we can get down to the clean fill that was dumped for us to use. We are hoping to dig this Fall, pending legal department sign-off.  We are in NEED of anyone interested who has SOME project management experience with a flexible schedule who can assist in the prep/build phases. Once the site is cleared we need to arrange for a gravel pad to be laid so we can bring the donated Trailer to the site for tool storage. It is a 50' Trailer currently sitting at the Navy Yard. We are working with Holt Logistics on the donation. Once the trailer is in place Jim D. can begin to build. If you would like to volunteer in the project management phase please call 267-262-1691.
Thanks and fingers crossed for a FALL BUILD.

HUGE SHOUT OUT TO BROWN'S SHOP RITE at Parkside and 52nd for arranging a $10,000 donation from Monster Drinks. Monster will donate to the ShopRite Foundation who in turn will donate to the BCGP to help pay for the natural fencing.

Friends of PhillyPumptrack at Parkside-Evans

Dear All,
We have officially registered our Friends of PhillyPumptrack at Parkside Evans group. If you signed up with us, you already received an email. If you would like to be added to our Friends group for build and maintenance volunteering opportunities please send an email to

We realize this has been a two-year process. The city bureaucracy is deep my friends, very deep. But we have faith and there are a lot of great people at Parks and Rec and the Fairmount Conservancy supporting this project. We will keep you posted this Spring. If you've driven by the site, you've seen our new trees growing out of the clean fill that was put on site last Spring! : )

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Tonight we will be meeting with Parks & Rec to start a Friends of PhillyPumptrack group. We have maintained a list of everyone that has ever showed up at an event and gave us a name and email. As soon as we have more information we will be letting everyone know how to join the group. We will be working with the Parkside Civic Association, Parks & Rec, and the neighbors to create a cohesive group of volunteers to work during the build phase as well as maintain the track.

We are currently awaiting final sign off from the City Legal Dept. and look forward to posting a build date soon. LONG TIME COMING!

MANY THANKS TO PHILLY BIKE EXPO AND BILENKY CYCLE WORKS for the $250.00 donation from the raffle proceeds. We need every penny we can get, soil, clay, natural fencing, storage container, machine rental, landscaping...

NEW NEWS! Huge Thanks to Paul Lonie at Acquaeconomics, Rosa and staff at Wells Appel and Paul and Jim for the cad drawings. Together, they made the PWD sign-off we needed possible. In the past five months we completed the site survey and had the soil erosion plan with the track design approved. One more hurdle... the City Legal Department. We are on it! Costing out soil and machine rentals.

We are corralling emails and will be updating people on build and volunteer days.
